PRODUCTS FROM VIETNAM

This category includes all seafood products sold by processors in Vietnam. Regardless of whether the raw materials are locally sourced or imported.

Yellowfin tuna, with the Latin name Thunnus albacares, holds a significant position in Vietnam’s seafood industry.

As the country’s most valuable wild-capture export product, it plays a crucial role in job creation and income generation. Approximately 3,000 vessels and 9,000 fishers are engaged in yellowfin tuna fishing, contributing to a remarkable total export value of nearly $646 million in 2022, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

If this estimation is accurate, Yellowfin tuna accounted for around 63% of the total tuna exports from Vietnam in 2022.

However, it’s important to note that over the last 20 years, the volume of locally caught tuna has decreased significantly. Nowadays, the import of raw materials contributes to a major part of the resource, indicating a shift in the industry’s dynamics.

In addition to Yellowfin, Vietnam exports several other species from the Thunnus genus. These include Bigeye (Thunnus obesus), Albacore (Thunnus alalunga), Longtail (Thunnus tonggol), and Pacific Bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis).

For these species, the raw material is imported, further emphasizing the importance of global trade in Vietnam’s tuna industry.
