Black tiger shrimp remains a vital component of Vietnam’s seafood export structure. In 2023, its export value reached nearly half a billion dollars, accounting for approximately 14% of the total shrimp exports. Despite a significant decline in Black Tiger exports compared to vannamei since the 2010s, Black Tiger shrimp continues to be a substantial revenue generator for Vietnam’s shrimp industry.

The global competition for Vannamei shrimp has intensified in recent years, and Vietnam faces fierce competition on this species. Less affected, Black Tiger shrimp stands as both a profitable export and a symbol of Vietnam’s strength in the shrimp industry. Vietnam holds a strategic position to bolster its Black Tiger shrimp production.

At OFCO, we believe that Vietnam should have interest in regaining some of the market share this species has lost to Vannamei over the last 15 years. In 2010, Vannamei represented only around 20% of all shrimp exports from Vietnam, while black tiger accounted for nearly 70%. The rapid shift from Black Tiger to Vannamei has been interesting for Vietnam but to consolidate better its Industry, Vietnam should find the right balance between both shrimp’s species.

Black Tiger exports from Vietnam could benefit from better differentiation and a unique marketing strategy. This includes distinguishing between Black Tigers from extensive mangrove farming, which is an exceptional product with less global competition, and black tigers from intensive pond farming. This approach could enhance the market position and profitability of Vietnam’s black tiger shrimp exports.

At the beginning of this century, Black Tiger shrimp was the symbol of Vietnam’s seafood export, representing most the country’s shrimp exports. However, a shift occurred in the early 2010s, and by 2013, Vannamei production overtook Black Tiger exports in Vietnam for the first time. The rise of Vannamei against Black Tiger has continued unabated since then. In 2021, Vannamei accounted for 78% of the total shrimp exports from Vietnam.

Blessed with an ideal tropical environment and robust infrastructure, Vietnam ranks as the third-largest Vannamei exporter in the world, after Ecuador and India. However, the rivalry among these three countries intensified in 2022, especially due to a surge in Ecuador’s shrimp production. To navigate these challenges, Vietnam’s Vannamei industry is exploring ways to enhance its competitiveness. One identified solution is to concentrate more on farming and emphasize the production of value-added products. Currently, value-added processed products account for 40-45% of the total annual value of shrimp exports and should tend to increase more in the coming years.

With its rich history in shrimp farming and skilled workforce, Vietnam retains a significant edge in processing.

Black Tiger and Vannamei represent 92 to 93% of shrimp exports from Vietnam from 2021 to 2023, leaving less than 8% for other shrimps species.

The other main shrimp species are mainly Pink shrimps (Metapenaeus afinis) and Cat tiger (Parapenaeopsis spp) often used in seafood cocktails.

Red shrimps from Argentina (Pleoticus muelleri) and Alaskan Pink Shrimp (Pandalus eous) are often imported to Vietnam within processing contracts. Macrobrachium (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) is also exported, but the volume has reduced considerably in recent years due to strong local demand for this item. In smaller volumes, Vietnam also exports Mantis shrimps (Squilla spp), Silver White Shrimps/Banana Shrimps (Fenneropenaeus merguiensis) and Greasy back shrimps (Metapenaeus ensis).

The last two species being wild caught or as by product of Black Tiger culture and with demands coming mainly from Hong Kong and other South East Asian Countries. Besides that, Baby Shrimp (Acetes japonicus) is also exported under dried state and shrimp paste.
